Suicycling and other achievements

Posted on the 21st of February 2012

Over the past few years achievement systems have become really popular in games. There are not many games that you can buy through steam that do not implement achievements in some way. This is getting to the point where it is starting to influence how I think about this in my every day-to-day life.

I was cycling back from work the other day. For part of the journey there are two roads that run parallel to each other and then they cross about half way down. There are no give way signs or any indication of who to "allow through first" so it comes down to a race. Being on a bike this puts me at a disadvantage, but when I do make it through first I always think this:

ACHIEVEMENT GET!
Suicycling
Whilst cycling, race a car past the junction without getting ran over!

This is starting to happen in most parts of my life. Whenever anything happens, I think "I wonder what the achievement would be for that?". You can apply this to anything. Surly I am not the only person to think of this. Perhaps there is a website for real life achievements!

One Google search later...

Achive Something Real
This is the best achievement website that I managed to find, there are a few interesting ideas on it and it's powered by the community. AchiveSomethingReal is interesting, but not quite sleek enough for my liking. It's missing something...

Booyah
Booyah made some kind of iPhone app, though I do not have an iPhone to try it out. Looks a bit childish to my eyes.

I decided to try and complete some other interesting life achievements such as:

Entrepreneurial
Start your own business.

Doing the unthinkable
Go outside the house/basement.

So there you have it. See if you can come up with some achivements.
